Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong recently spoke to ACHS International about their accreditation experience and how they are committing to excellence in patient safety and care.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Ms See Kee FOK, Senior Manager of the Quality, Safety & Risk Management Department at Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong about the organisation's commitment to excellence in healthcare, the impact of their international accreditation, and the innovative approaches they are adopting to advance patient care.
1. Tell me a little bit about your organisation
Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong (Gleneagles) is a leading private hospital offering a wide spectrum of medical services across more than 35 specialties and subspecialties. We are part of IHH Healthcare which is one of the world’s largest healthcare providers. Gleneagles serves as a teaching hospital affiliated with The University of Hong Kong (HKU), contributing significantly to healthcare education and clinical research. As a clinical research site of HKU, we actively participate in clinical trials in a spectrum of areas including drug development, medical equipment innovation and vaccine research.
2. How many staff do you employ and how many patients do you treat?
Since our establishment in 2017 we have grown to have around 1,600 dedicated employees. In the past 12 months alone, we have provided services to over 240,000 patients.
3. What was the process like going through your assessment?
The assessment process was facilitated by helpful guidance with the ACHSI Quality Partner consultation sessions that were particularly valuable in helping our teams understand the requirements. These helped different teams to identify and present the right information during assessments, allowing us to demonstrate the work we have done. Our coach was an experienced ACHSI assessor who guided us effectively.
4. How was the ACHSI accreditation experience? Was there anything in particular that you learnt?
The accreditation experience initiated a thorough process of self-review which was beneficial to the hospital. The comments by the assessors offered opportunities to learn and formulate corresponding improvement measures.
Gleneagles underwent the ACHS EQuIP7 accreditation in October 2023, which was just a few months after our hospital began resuming fully normal services after COVID-19. It was rewarding to see that we were able to demonstrate our high standards of patient care delivered even during the few years of pandemic through the accreditation experience.
5. Do you have any advice for other members going through these programs?
The “Person Centred System” (PCS) offered by ACHSI will be the trend in the development and delivery of healthcare. Moving from caring mainly for patients and family to the concept of extending appropriate care for staff and the community helps sets a new standard of excellent healthcare. We believe this is a model that will help guide healthcare providers to take a more holistic approach in formulating and delivering their services.
6. What does International accreditation mean to you and your organisation?
The accreditation has been a testament to the effort we have put in ensuring high quality and standards of care, and to the excellent services we have delivered in various aspects. It is also a recognition for our staff who have worked hard in driving and implementing the policies into practice.
